Marcus Center for the Performing Arts Seeks Director of Community Engagement and Diversity
Under the direct supervision of the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, the Director of Community Engagement & Diversity is responsible for stewardship of the Marcus Center’s Diversity and Community Engagement activities, including strategic planning, audience development, communication, educational outreach, cultural programming, workforce development, customer service and other diversity goals as developed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop the Center’s Strategic Plans for Diversity and Community Engagement, and coordinating plan implementation.
- Serve as advisor to the President & CEO, who is responsible for overall organizational leadership on Diversity and Community Engagement.
- Oversee development and growth of current Diversity and Community Engagement programs.
- Manage current mission driven diversity & community engagement programming and events.
- Management and coordination of donation requests including tickets and in-kind donations for community.
- Assist various Center departments and operations in implementing diversity initiatives.
- Research opportunities for cultural programming and advising the Director of Programming in the selection and scheduling of such programming.
- Seek out, developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with key community organizations/leaders to build Marcus Center’s relationships in the community.
- Identify underwriting, sponsorship and promotional opportunities for the Center’s diversity initiatives.
- With the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, oversee budgeting and usage of diversity/cultural programming funds.
- With Vice President of Sales and Marketing, analyzing the Center’s demographic data and formulate, conduct and compile market research.
- Prepare and implement communication plans, periodic reports and data for various parties (e.g. board, public, resident organizations).
- Working with other Marcus Center staff to ensure all internal and external communication and customer service is culturally sensitive and inclusive.
- Staff and coordinate the work of the Board of Director’s Diversity & Community Engagement Committee.
- Assist Development Team in coordinating the Center’s annual Broadway Bash fundraising event.
- Write scripts for community events, annual meeting and special events
- Photograph Marcus Center events with Center camera on an as-needed basis.
- Attend conferences, seminars other off-site events as needed, both locally and nationally

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to make informed decisions to maintain positive image and public perception of the Marcus Center and its programs; disseminate information that maintains that positive image and public perception to the greater community
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, Board members, donors, customers, business contacts, vendors, elected officials and management on matters of business, schedules and meetings. Requires the use of tact, good judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Facilitate cross organizational efforts, maintain deadlines, oversee event planning, coordination and completion
- Ability to supervise various administrative personnel, student interns and department volunteers to ensure coordination and completion of various projects from grant writing to community presentation
- Understanding of funding resources including local, state and national and ability to maintain and grow funding relationships for outreach activities and partnerships
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent related experience.
- Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
- Two years marketing or communications experience specializing in community relations, or two years’ experience in cultural/community programming.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Position requires excellent written and oral skills. Must be able to compose logical and orderly proposals and informational pieces for executive management, funders, community groups and resident arts organizations. Proficiency in Spanish would be helpful.
Other Skills and Abilities
- Must have excellent computer skills.
- Must be able to function with little or no supervision.
