Milwaukee Repertory Theater, a LORT theater located in the heart of Wisconsin’s largest metropolitan area, is currently seeking applicants for the position of Technical Director. Milwaukee Repertory Theater ignites positive change in the cultural, social, and economic vitality of its community by creating world-class theater experiences that entertain, provoke, and inspire meaningful dialogue among an audience representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity.

The Technical Director is part of a three-member TD team responsible for budgeting, engineering, drafting, overseeing construction and load-in/out of scenery for all Milwaukee Rep Productions. Along with the Master Carpenter, Scenic Paint Charge, and the other Production Departments, the TD is part of a collaborative team of artists dedicated to achieving the highest production values possible.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
 Collaborate with designer, director and production manager to achieve a design that can be realized within budget and schedule
 Accurately budget preliminary designs for labor and material costs
 Research and engineer all scenic elements
 Review and approve shop drawings produced by the Technical Direction team
 Communicate with other production areas regarding cross-departmental elements
 Answer designer questions about the theater spaces and shop capabilities
 Act as point person for responding to rehearsal and production notes
 Develop load-in and strike plans, including labor and special equipment or safety needs for all productions
 Oversee load-in and load-out of scenery in all venues
 Attend technical rehearsals and post-rehearsal production meetings
 Track departmental spending  Ensure that designers receive all relevant inventories, and venue information
 Participate in season planning which includes reading scripts, budgeting shows, and anticipating future facility needs
 Review and approve Scenic Department capital expenditures
 Attend department meetings as needed
 Maintain safe working environments in all performance spaces and scene shop
 Administer performance reviews to scenic department
 Oversee and track inventory
 Additional duties as required


Skills and Qualifications:
 Minimum 5 years professional experience working in large scale scene shop
 Demonstrated knowledge and experience in scenery construction and engineering
 Proficient in AutoCAD, with ability to generate clear and concise drawings
 Strong verbal and written communication skills
 Ability to work as a team member and present a positive attitude
 Must be able to multi-task multiple projects, maintain organization, and be detail oriented  Ability to work some weekend and evening hours 


Physical Demands:
 Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting, bending, standing, brisk walking, and stair climbing.
 Able to safely operate a motor vehicle
