Summary:

As a member of the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts Leadership Team reporting to the Executive Director, this position manages the development, implementation, management, and assessment of all aspects of the Wilson Center’s education programs, art classes and camps; oversight of exhibitions and programs in the Ploch Art Gallery, Lynn Chappy Arts Education Wing, and Lynn Chappy ArtsPark; and the annual Wilson Center Guitar Festival. Oversees and supervises engagement team members and consultant. The Director of Engagement is responsible for strategically planning, organizing, and directing the performing and visual arts education activities of the Wilson Center. This position has oversight and management of all staff in these areas. Responsibilities include the oversight and management of the Wilson Center Education budget.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for thematic programming and audience engagement. Plans and directs Wilson Center programmatic initiatives in arts education, camps, and visual arts programming. Oversees all aspects of Wilson Center engagement programming including but not limited to: masterclasses, workshops, lectures, and activities in the community. Responsible for ensuring the Wilson Center’s high standard of quality programming while promoting efficiency and meeting established budget goals.

  2. Meets regularly with the Executive Director and the Education Committee of the Board providing updates, quarterly reports, and any other documents as needed.

  3. Proposes and manages annual education budget and income projections in consultation with senior staff and Executive Director.

  4. Evaluates and reports results and manages to assure continuous improvement and ongoing viability of programs/services.

  5. Recruits, trains, and assigns teaching artists to deliver Wilson Center programming onsite, in the schools, and community.

  6. Responsible for relations, communication, and meeting with all prospective internal and external engagement constituents in order to ascertain needs and coordination of programs.

  7. Directs the development and delivery of visual arts programming, including but not limited to the Lynn Chappy Arts Education Wing, Ploch Art Gallery, and Lynn Chappy ArtsPark to engage and educate audiences.

  8. Works with the Curatorial and Engagement Committee of the Wilson Center Board. Develops appropriate policies and procedures for curation and engagement and oversees teaching artist contracts.

  9. Maintenance of accurate records, complete calendaring of engagement and programming taking place at the Wilson Center, and consideration of other community programming that could affect program success.

  10. Departmental administrative responsibilities include but are not limited to: budget oversight and income goal projection for programming at the Wilson Center; ensuring that all expenditures fall within the set budget to maximize a positive net outcome; monitoring load and nature of work, staff and equipment resources, and shift resources to meet current and future needs.

  2. Prepares departmental reports for Executive Committee and Board presentation. Ensures communications such as agendas and reports are distributed, maintains files and budgets with accurate, up-to-date record keeping.

  3. Directs the development and delivery of arts education programming including but not limited to the Lynn Chappy Arts Education Wing, Ploch Art Gallery, Guitar Festival, and Lynn Chappy ArtsPark to engage and educate Wilson Center visitors.

  4. Directs the review, selection, and contracting for gallery shows for an annual season that attracts audiences.

  5. Attends Wilson Center programs and events as needed.

  6. Directs Board Education committee communications, ensuring that agendas and reports are distributed, maintains files and budgets with accurate, up-to-date record-keeping.

  7. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  •   Bachelor’s Degree in arts education or administration (visual arts/music/dance/theater)

  •   5 years’ experience in administrative, supervisory role preferably in arts education or presenting organization

  •   Requires strong computer skills MS Office Suite, other software programs and internet skills.

  •   Ability to work in a collaborative environment, supporting shared goals

  •   Ability to work nights and weekends for events and meetings as required.

  •   Experience and knowledge of Tessitura ticketing database and system is preferred but not required.

    • Ability to manage a multi-dimensional team, including a full-time Guest Services Manager and Hospitality and Events

      Manager and part-time House Managers, Volunteer Ushers, and event over-hires.

    Preferred Skills and Abilities:

    Strong leadership and communication skills, including a clear ability to energize staff, peers, artists, and audiences. Must be able to use tact and diplomacy. Highly organized, self-motivated and possess ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
