What happens when a liberated lesbian brings her African-American wife home to Texas to meet her bigoted, Southern Baptist Mother? SWEET TEXAS RECKONING won the 2016 Fall Festival Audience Vote and will be the very first Artemisia production to invite the audience to experience our unique development process leading to a full production of this amazing feminist play.
Traci Godfrey is an award-winning playwright and actress and she sums up her unique experience writing SWEET TEXAS RECKONING – “Having grown up closeted in Texas, I am acutely aware of the pain and isolation of dealing with one’s sexuality. I believe we have come a long way, but there is so much of our path yet to be traveled.” Artemisia’s full production of SWEET TEXAS RECKONING is undergoing an exciting development process – one that will be directly shared with our audience – and will include a launch party with the playwright, an interactive workshop with talent, director and audience and a panel discussion around Traci’s wonderful examination of bigotry and its impact on the here and now.
Slated to direct SWEET TEXAS RECKONING, Julie Proudfoot, Artemisia’s Artistic Director, has this to say about the play: “Traci is that rare combination of great theatre artist and gifted storyteller. We love her characters because we recognize their humanity. SWEET TEXAS RECKONING takes us home in so many hilarious and inspiring ways.”
