Artemisia celebrates the upcoming 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with THE SUFFRAGE PLAYS, an evening of three one-act comedies focused on the importance of voting rights for women.  Artemisia will offer post-show discussions at selected performances to examine the history of voting rights and the impact of one person – one vote on the 2020 presidential election.

A CHAT WITH MRS. CHICKY & MISS APPLEYARD’S AWAKENING

by Evelyn Glover

Evelyn Glover created familiar everyday situations with relatable characters and focused on the plight of working-class women.  A CHAT WITH MRS. CHICKY depicts a conversation between a suffragette charwoman and an upper-class matron.  In MISS APPLEYARD’S AWAKENING an anti-suffrage activist comes to realize the fallacies and illogic of her views.

PRESS CUTTINGS

by George Bernard Shaw

Shaw’s one-act farce satirizes British politicians and their attitudes against suffrage by imagining a time when suffrage activism leads to a chaotic society and the imposition of martial law.

The Den Theatre, 1331 N. Milwaukee, Chicago
