Verona Area High School students will perform the 1955 play “Inherit the Wind” during the first weekend of March.
Starting at 7 p.m. each night March 7-9 at the Verona Area High School Performing Arts Center, 300 Richard St., the show follows the school’s fall production of “Mary Poppins,” which saw record attendance rates last fall, according to a district fundraising website.
The play is about the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. The plot focuses on a courtroom battle over whether a teacher should go to jail for teaching evolution in school. Lawyers Matthew Harrison Brady (Seamus Angell) and Henry Drummond (Ryan Vanderbush) will decide the fate of substitute teacher Bertram Cates, played by Gabe Bowman.
Meanwhile, Cates’ love interest Rachel Brown (Daphne Buan), the daughter of the town pastor, finds herself caught between both sides.
Steven J. Nibbe is the play’s director and set designer. Lauri Halminiak is the producer, Patrick Colquhoun, the student stage manager and Leslie Frank, the costume designer.
General admission tickets are $10 and $8 for students and seniors.
